For most brides, the wedding dress will come sometime before the wedding so as to prepare for alterations before the big day. When your wedding dress arrives, it is important to store it properly to ensure that nothing happens to it before you wear it. After the big day, you will need to continue to store the dress this way until it is needed again (for a daughter's wedding) or you decide to sell it. Even if you don't intend to sell it, you should continue to store it properly, to maintain its excellent condition. Not taking care to properly store the dress could cause damage that will either be really expensive or impossible to repair.
The dress should be stored in an acid free box, out of direct sunlight. Make sure the storage place is dry as well, to prevent any damage to the fabric of your dress. After the wedding, take your dress to a professional dry cleaner and let the cleaner know of any areas that concern you, such as stains it may have picked up at the reception. When the dress has been cleaned, continue to store it in the acid free box and pull it out each year to check for damages and to let the dress have a break from the box. Do not use a box with a cellophane window, because if any light gets through the window to the fabric, it could cause discolouration. Do not use the plastic bag you may have used to transport the dress to the seamstress or the cleaners as this will not provide the protection you need.
Remember, it is possible for some stains to show up several months or years after the event, so this is why it is important to take it out and look at it each year. If you are going to busy on your honeymoon, see if someone, such as your Maid of Honour will be able to drop it off for you. Do not hang the dress as this could cause the neck and shoulders to stretch and make the dress difficult to wear.Just remember, investing in a proper pH neutral wedding dress box is essential!
